BNKS is an NGO established in 1991 by a group of educated and energetic like minded Bandarban social workers with a view to promote the socio-economic and cultural status of the remote hilly rural poor and socially excluded people of the Chittagong Hill Tracts of Bangladesh. BNKS stresses emphasis on women and children through conscience, capacity and institution building, capital formation and health, water and sanitation provision and awareness. BNKS implement demand driven problem solving programs by adopting integrated appropriate local and modern scientific knowledge and techniques which promote a bottom up and participatory development process. BNKS works with all vulnerable people irrespective of race, disability, age, gender and religion. BNKS believes in and feels the need for cooperation and solidarity among all classes of people as well as with the Government for achieving its Goal and Objectives.

Vision
The disadvantaged people of the Chittagong Hill Tracts quality of life is sustainably improved so that they are empowered to live their lives in security, dignity and true to their cultural traditions whilst being able to be part of the mainstream development process of the country.

Mission
To improve the social, economic and cultural status of the marginalized people of the Chittagong Hill Community specially the women and children in a sustainable way through developing their knowledge, capacity and services.

 Main Goals and Objectives:

BNKS has defined its major functions and operations in terms of sustainable development; i.e., actions which lead to a lasting increase in the capacity of hill community to improve the quality of life of its people. This is the fundamental mission of BNKS and through limited resources BNKS takes on program activities with an emphasis on activities which contribute to sustainable development particularly women and children at the local level. BNKS’s goals reflect the local needs, national priorities as stated in the Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper (PRSP), congruence with the Millennium Development Goals (MDG), and a growing consensus among donors, based on experience and numerous program evaluations, about what is needed to achieve conditions favorable to sustainable development in Chittagong Hill Tracts.

 

GOAL 1:             Community people’s participation in profitable economic activities and agricultural development encouraged and facilitated

Objective 1.1:     Critical markets linked, expanded and strengthened

Objective 1.2:     High value agricultural development for improved income encouraged

Objective 1.3:    Access to economic opportunity for the hill community expanded and made more equitable

Goal 2:                Human capacity built through education and training

Objective 2.1      Access to quality basic education, especially for girls and women, expanded.

Objective 2.2     Increase community participation in educational policy and school management

Objective 2.3    Programs and practices which encourage learning to address development needs and problems established

 

Goal 3:              Community and Specially Women and Child Health Protected

Objective 3.1      Infant and child health and nutrition improved and infant and child mortality reduced

Objective 3.2      Deaths and adverse health outcomes to women as a result of pregnancy and child birth reduced

Goal 5:                Disaster Risk and Environment Degradation Minimized

Objective 5.1      Rates of deforestation slowed and rates of afforestation increased.

Objective 5.2      Populations vulnerable to disasters and potential impacts of disasters identified

Objective 5.3      Management of forests, water resources and hill zones improved

 

Goal 6:                Women and Child Rights Ensured

Objective 6.1      Women’s and children’s empowering participation in development activities ensured

Objective 6.2      Awareness and respect of women’s and children’s rights promoted in all sectors

Objective 6.3      Right to Property and entitlement ensured

 

Goal 7:                Local Cultural Values and Identity reserved

Objective 7.2      Create effective awareness on local cultural values and its potential impact on people’s quality of life and livelihood
